PWRDF Expands Relief Efforts After Hurricane Matthew
Two initial grants will support ACT Alliance projects in Haiti and Cuba
Posted October 17, 2016
As Hurricane Matthew dissipates, efforts to assess the extent of the storm’s effects in Haiti and Cuba are beginning in earnest. According to PWRDF, the initial numbers are staggering, with over 1.4 million people affected in Haiti and 175,000 in Cuba. Houses were destroyed, roads damaged, bridges collapsed, crops lost and trees downed as a result of the major hurricane.
To date, PWRDF has sent $40,000 for relief work in Haiti and a further $20,000 for relief work in Cuba. Both these grants are through the ACT Alliance, whose members were active in both countries long before the hurricane and will be there long after this relief work is completed.
Described as one of the fiercest hurricanes to make its way through the Caribbean in over a decade, Hurricane Matthew battered Haiti and Cuba with torrential rain and 230 kilometre-per-hour winds earlier in October.
Bishop Michael Bird was in touch with Bishop Griselda Delgado del Carprio of the Diocese of Cuba before the storm passed over the island to express our prayers and support. According to Bishop Griselda, local efforts have focused on safeguarding human lives, shoring up buildings and distributing purified water ahead of its impact. The Diocese of Cuba also released emergency response funds to help support relief efforts post-hurricane.
The grant by PWRDF designated for Cuba will support post-hurricane relief efforts focussed on providing food security, water and sanitation, shelter and psychosocial support.
