Lay Readers

Licensed Lay Readers

A Licensed Lay Reader is a layperson who is licensed by the bishop to assist in leading worship and performing other liturgical functions within the church. They are trained by the parish incumbent to lead non-sacramental services, such as a service of The Word (such as Morning and Evening Prayer). They may also read lessons, lead prayers, and preach at the request and with permission of the incumbent. Licenses are issued for a three-year period and may be renewed upon the incumbent’s request.

Licensed Lay Readers do not have the authority to perform all sacraments (like baptisms or marriages) or give absolution, as those are reserved for ordained clergy. They are recognized as key lay leaders who help support and enrich worship and ministry within their communities.
