Over 100 delegates and staff from across the Diocese descended upon Hamilton May 2-4 for Youth Synod in Action. Hosted by the Cathedral congregation, this dynamic youth ministry program takes place each year during the first weekend of May for delegates ages 13-21.
Youth Synod in Action is designed to help youth to take their passion for social justice out into the community by choosing an issue; exploring both its impacts and how to partner with people to make a difference in day-long immersion experiences book-ended by plenaries. Eight issue groups (Local Poverty, Global Poverty, Environmental Justice, Indigenous Justice, Gender Violence Prevention, Mental Health, Peace and Non-violent Reconciliation, and Corporate Social Responsibility) are facilitated by a Youth Ministry volunteer and a local issue expert.
Youth Synod in Action takes the church into the community and in doing so enhances partnerships and equips participants for ministry. “Community partners make this event real and possible, bringing issues of justice home to our youth,” says the Reverend Bill Mous.
Then delegates commit themselves to action through motions that arise from their experience and which are debated Sunday afternoon during a Synod proper session.
