Pre-Synod Video Unveiled

New approach seeks to engage more people in the work of Synod

Posted October 14, 2014

This year, our lead into Synod looks a bit different. Rather than have a few regional meetings, the Diocese is changing the way it undertakes our pre-Synod orientation by delivering it in a video and online format. "It's a bit of an experiment... and a risk," says Bishop Michael Bird. But he adds, "taking faithful and innovative risks are part of what it means to be Anglican." It is hoped that this approach will offer flavor for the Second Session of our 140th Synod while at the same time broadening the circle of those informed about the work of Synod.

The video is available on YouTube by clicking on the picture of Bishop Bird. A short discussion guide has also been posted to complement the video and foster deeper discernment. Three areas of our upcoming Synod are featured in the guide: Anglican Identity, Synod Gatherings, and Approving the Budget.

Clergy and lay leaders are encouraged to use these pre-Synod resources in innovative and creative ways. For instance, the video might be shown before or after Sunday worship or post it on your parish Facebook page and invite reflections.

In addition, a link on the Synod webpage is available to directly ask questions regarding the matters before Synod. These questions will be answered promptly and the response will be posted on the Synod webpage for all to review prior to Synod.

The second session of the 140th Synod of the Diocese of Niagara takes place on November 8 at Christ's Church Cathedral.
