Bishop on Sabbatical

A time for rest, refreshment, study, prayer and learning

Posted June 18, 2014

In Bishop Michael Bird's words, "After seven years, I know how much I need some time away from the daily demands of my office – time for rest, refreshment, study, prayer and learning. I am looking forward to being ‘off the grid’ for awhile and to honing my Spanish skills – important because of the developing Hispanic congregations in our midst!"

As he prepared for his sabbatical, the Bishop wished to express his gratitude "to work in a church in which life-long learning, self-care and reflection are highly valued." He added, "I encourage all clergy and licensed lay workers to keep the possibilities of a sabbatical in mind. While there is an expectation that individual parishes will be able to contribute some of the costs associated with interim clergy during the sabbatical, there are resources available from the Diocese which ensures that none – parishes or clergy – who want to consider this seriously should feel constrained from doing so.  I believe that it is important for us all."

Please be assured of the Bishop's prayers and blessings during the summer months. He also asks that you hold him, Dean Peter Wall and all Cathedral Place staff in your prayers during his three month sabbatical. Throughout this time the Dean will serve as Commissary. All matters normally requiring episcopal approval or attention should continue to be directed to Alison D'Atri in the Bishop's office.
