40 Days for a Deeper Faith

Varied Lenten resources offer something for everyone

Posted February 9, 2015

Lent is often a period of intentional discernment and self-examination in the life of our faith tradition; an opportunity to reflect upon who and where and how God is calling us to be.

Being Christian CoverThis Lent, Bishop Michael has selected Being Christian by Archbishop Rowan Williams as his Lenten book.  Through Being Christian we are invited to explore four essential components of the Christian life: baptism, Bible, Eucharist and prayer. This clear and accessible book offers us practical ways to enliven our spirituality and deepen our faith. Many parishes using Being Christian as a Lent book may well have five sessions rather than four (because of the length of Lent). If so, the Journeys in Faith group has provided supplemental questions for your use.  Click here for the supplemental questions.

But if that's not your cup of tea, we have also asked for a few other recommendations from people around the diocese. Archdeacon Lynne Marchant, Director of Stewardship, commends the 40 Acts of Generosity Movement as part of your Lenten discipline. Canon Susan Wilson has coordinated a series of Lenten meditations based on Mark's gospel by over 30 contributors for the February and March Niagara Anglican newspaper. While our diocesan PWRDF Coordinator, Doris M'Timkulu suggests parishes explore food security issues by focussing on a different Fredism for each of the five Sundays in Lent or by using PWRDF's Lenten resource written by the Reverend Elizabeth Steeves.

The Anglican Church of Canada has also compiled a webpage of additional Lenten resources for people looking to deepen their experience of Lent. The page includes links to Bible studies and daily devotions.
